This panel topic was born out of a paper, AI and Data Use: Surveillance Technology and Community Disquiet in the Age of COVID-19, which was co-written by CAIDG's Alicia Wee and Professor Mark Findlay.
In the first hour, Alicia set out the context for the session before passing the time to the panellists who made a short presentation sharing their perspectives. The session rounded off with half an hour of Q&A. Very briefly, the speakers touched on the following issues:
- Mr Lazarus Chok, on the effects of the emphasis of technological solutionism;
- Associate Professor Hallam Stevens, on citizen science and public trust;
- Assistant Professor Monamie Haines, on the implications of surveillance in migrant dorms, wastewater surveillance, and the Smart Nation;
- Mr Muhammad Faizal, Research Fellow at CENS, on surveillance tools in COVID-19 and positive surveillance; and
- Associate Professor Eugene Tan, on the significance of public health and privacy in regards to TraceTogether data use.
